Detroit Lions wide receiver Chuck Hughes was playing in a game against the Chicago Bears in 1971 when he collapsed on the field. It was later revealed that Hughes had a blood clot that had formed because of a condition that caused his arteries to harden.

Frantic efforts by medics and trainers to save his life were all in vain. To this day, Hughes remains the only NFL player to die during a game. He was only 28 years old.
