Everything appeared normal as the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs players went out for warm-ups on June 22, 2002. However, it was noted with concern by the Cardinals that pitcher Darryl Kile was not there.

Kile was later found dead from a heart attack in his room. After the news filtered to the stadium, the game was called off as the Cardinals turned to their fans for prayers and well wishes. He was 33 years old.
