The Iron Horse played 2,130 consecutive games. Lou Gehrig’s record stood for over 60 years before being broken by Cal Ripken Jr. Gehrig set or has held numerous records that included most Grand Slams (23), a mark that was finally broken by Alex Rodriguez.
It was a shock to fans everywhere when Gehrig announced that he was forced to retire due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS. Gehrig died two years after his retirement, aged 37.
